World Humanitarian Day 2020 is observed to pay tribute and honor to the aid workers who involve themselves selflessly in humanitarian services by risking their lives. The day is celebrated to create awareness among the people about those affected by the crisis of the world.

What is the History of World Humanitarian Day?

World Humanitarian Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008, which was first officially celebrated in 2009. The date of 19th August was chosen because it marks the anniversary of the Canal Hotel's bombing in Baghdad, an event in which the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Sergio Vieira de Mello and twenty others sacrificed their lives.

What is Importance of World Humanitarian Day?

World humanitarian Day is important because Humanitarian aid workers are also a soldier of the nation and the most heroic and honorable people alive, putting themselves in harm's way by suffering to conflict zones and disaster areas to help and revive the suffering strangers. Despite this great work, these workers are rarely acknowledged publicly, sometimes for their own safety. World Humanitarian Day is a sobering reminder for all of us to acknowledge the contribution of the humanitarian worker towards the humanity.

World humanitarian Day signifies the need of humanitarian workers in the world, because there is a lot of people in the world who need humanitarian assistance but due to lack of these selfless heros they did not get that assistance. So, this day is make people aware about this Honourable work.

Theme of World Humanitarian Day 2020 is "Aid workers are overcoming unprecedented access hurdles to assist people in humanitarian crises in 54 countries, as well as in a further nine countries which have been catapulted into humanitarian need by the COVID-19 pandemic"
